How it All Began

It started with Aaron & Cassie Foord who, having become very  disillusioned with life in suburban West Sussex, decided on a move to the country to run their own business. Little did they know it would take them about as far as they could travel within the UK, to the remote island of Unst, Shetland. They landed in the Shetlands in October 2004 and moved into two crofters cottages, and within one of them was to be founded Foords Chocolates, initially with two ranges of chocolates - the Luxury and Fruit selections.

In November 2004 they released the Milk Chocolate Caramels  intended only as a short time Limited Edition but their popularity has been such to keep them within the range to become a best seller.

In March 2005 after many requests from customers the ‘Classic Selection’ was released along with a range of solid chocolates for children called ‘Kids Stuff’.

In June 2005, the Coeliac Society of the UK approved the Luxury range for their members as gluten free. Since then the selection has increased dramatically, with many extra childrens chocolates such as ghosts at Halloween and Santas at Christmas, and in the boxed ranges they include Chocolate Ginger Creams, Mint Selections and a Dark Chocolate Selection, all with sumptuous soft centres. Soon after the opening of their ‘factory’ to the public in 2006 and the addition of a  purpose built tearooms, it became obvious that they would need much bigger premises as the popularity of

he factory and the infamous ‘Deluxe Hot Chocolate’ increased and word soon spread, so in  November 2007 they moved to the former RAF camp at Saxa Vord, and after a couple of months and much decorating opened ‘The Chocolate Experience’, a chocolate based café.

Aaron & Cassie and their 14 dogs still live in one of the croft cottages with sheep, ponies, chickens and ducks living outside. We hope you enjoy your visit here today and will not only have seen the most northerly business in the UK, but also the finest chocolates Shetland can offer. What better to remember your holiday than with a souvenir you can eat!
